Load Balancing

As the number of  Electric vehicles increases, the demands placed on the electricity supply both nationally and in your local area from EV charging will grow and grow.  Increasingly,  it will be necessary “smooth out” the demand to ensure that the available power is spread equitably amongst customers, we refer to this as “load balancing”.

Load Balancing at Home

Most EV drivers plug in when they get home from work just at the same time that people are cooking evening meals and turning on the TV creating a “peak” in demand which can be smoothed out by experienced and knowledgeable domestic electricians with “load balancing”…. Benchmark EV Charging employ only experienced and fully qualified domestic electricians and will make necessary modifications to ensure you don’t overload your electrical system causing  it to annoyingly “trip.”

This can be achieved either by installing an additional energy meter which recognizes the EV charger(s) and ensures your home always has priority, alternatively with “Smart Charging” you can limit charging to off-peak periods when energy demand in the house is low.

Commercial/public installations

If  you have multiple EV chargers located in commercial/public locations demand will usually be at its peak during normal working hours. Load balancing will help to optimise the EV charging network and distribute available power equally across all operational charge points, ensuring that EVs are charged as quickly as possible and safely.  Benchmark EV Charging are highly experienced Commercial / Industrial Electricians and can advise/implement on the choice of practical solutions available ie

a) It may be possible to achieve effective load balancing by employing a single EV Charger configured as a ‘master device’ to manage the network.

b) Alternatively, a dynamic load-balancing device that takes into account the fluctuating demands on the local power grid could be installed to protect against system overload.

When designing an EV charging network, we recomend planning ahead and attempting to “future proof” by anticipating future demands in your area. The number of EVs is growing fast,  and with it the number of EV chargers required with it we recommend thinking big when it comes to “load balancing.”
